Teak Care! How to Look After Your Garden Furniture
The summer is almost here, and it's a time when many of us take every opportunity we get to enjoy some outdoor living in the sunshine and warm weather. It can be even better to spend some time outdoors if you have a luxury garden furniture set to relax on and soak up some of the summer rays.
But do you know how to care for teak furniture? Taking care of teak properly can help to protect your furniture and ensure that it is perfect for use over many summers. Teak is actually a very durable and tough wood, so it is able to withstand much of the hardship thrown at it by nature and the weather. With that in mind, it's a great option if you don't want to be spending too much time caring for your teak outdoor furniture.
However, there are still some steps that can be taken to make sure that your teak is cared for properly. Here are some top tips for teak furniture care that can keep your garden set in top condition.
Cover Up
While teak is extremely weatherproof and resistant to water, it can often be a good idea to help it out a little by offering some extra protection. In order to maintain the original glow of the wood for a little longer, garden furniture covers can be purchased that can offer additional shelter from the elements, as well as keeping it clean when not in use.

Avoid Water Pooling
As already mentioned, the natural oils in teak make it very resistant to rain and water, but it is not a good idea to let water pool on or around it. This can be avoided by moving it to an area where water won't be able to collect, and by wiping any standing water off the seat.
Be Careful with Food
Some foods, particularly those that are oily, can leave stains in teak wood. Certain drinks can also have the same effect, as can table sauces and condiments such as ketchup. Of course, many people like to enjoy the warmer weather by hosting barbecues and garden parties, so it is inevitable that your garden furniture will be used. If you notice a spillage, clean it up straight away. You could also try using a table cloth or cover to reduce the chances of food being spilled on it.
Clean Regularly
Teak is considered to be the gold standard for garden furniture because of its toughness and the lack of maintenance that it requires. However, cleaning every so often can help to make it last that bit longer and keep it looking in pristine condition. And it couldn't be easier. Stains can be removed by lightly sanding them out, and a brush can help to remove any other dirt. Warm soapy water can be used to clean the furniture, and can then be simply rinsed off with a hose pipe.
Use a Renovator
If your teak garden furniture does become weathered and worn, fear not; it can still be revived to its former glory. Many people like the weathered look of teak, which takes on a silver-grey appearance or patina through the natural weathering process and exposure to sunlight and rain. However, although this weathered appearance does not have an effect on the wood's quality or strength, some people may wish to revert to the initial colouring of the wood, so teak renovation products are available to restore the furniture to its original honey wood colour. These rejuvenating sets help to clean the teak and revive it, leaving looking just like new. A little bit of light sanding may also be required to smooth out any roughness caused by weathering.
